Crochet Glossary Master List

I have put together this crochet glossary master list to help you decipher crochet patterns. 


abbreviation

used in crochet patterns to shorten a crochet word or term


alternate

used to alternate stitches or rows


approximately

the measurement of distance - can be used for the measurement of yarn or to approximate stitches


back loop

located on the head of a crochet stitch. It is the loop furthest from you as you crochet


back post

work a new stitch around the back of the post of the indicated stitch


base 

located at the very bottom of a stitch


begin

used in reference for the beginning of a crochet row or can be used as a reference for a certain number of stitches


between

directions to repeat a portion of a crochet pattern or can be used to describe a specific area on the pattern


bobble

a series of stitches performed in one stitch to give the appearance of texture


body

the height of the stitch makes up the body, also called the post


chain

the chain forms the foundation or base for building up more stitches


cluster

crochet stitches that form a cluster, further instructions will be given with the crochet pattern


continue

continue working the same stitch into the pattern


counting

count stitches every time you finish a row to know if you skipped stitches


double

the double crochet is a foundation stitch, it is twice the height of a single crochet stitch


decrease

subtracting a stitch on the row or round being worked, a crochet technique used for shaping


draw

pull the yarn back through the chain or stitch


edging

a border that is created by working around the edge of a crochet project


fabric

crochet stitches are used to create fabric from yarn


fasten off

close or weave in the tail end of yarn so that it does not unravel


finishing

weaving the tail end of yarn back and forth through stitches


follow

indication that you should follow the same pattern on a chosen row


front loop

located on the head of a crochet stitch. It is the loop closest to you as you crochet


front post

the front part of the body of a crochet stitch


gauge

refers to the number of stitches per inch


grip

also called the thumb rest, is located in the middle of the crochet hook


half

used in a half double crochet stitch, a stitch between the single and double crochet in height


handle

located at the end or bottom part of the crochet hook


head

also called the point, is located at the very top of the crochet hook


increase

increasing a stitch on the row or round being worked, a crochet technique used for shaping


join yarn

changing or joining on a new yarn color


loop

loop or loops of yarn that are created by working a crochet stitch


marker

stitch marker, marking a specific place, or stitch on a crochet pattern


main color

the main color of yarn used for your pattern


ounce

used as a measurement on a yarn label, clarifies the amount of yarn needed


pattern

set of instructions, you follow to create a crochet project


popcorn

crochet stitch that combines several stitches in one


place marker

a tool used to mark a specific place on a crochet pattern


previous

indicate stitches completed on a previous row or round


puff

puff is a stitch that puffs out from the crocheted fabric


remaining

the amount of stitches remaining on a row or round


repeat

means to repeat the crochet patterns instructions


reverse

used in combination with stitches to reverse stitches on a project


round

a sequence of crochet stitches worked in a circular pattern


right side

correct side of a crochet swatch or project


row

a sequence of crochet stitches worked in a row


shell

a technique used to form the appearance of a shell in a crochet pattern

shaft

located in the small space before the thumb rest on a crochet hook


shaping

increasing and/or decreasing stitches is also called shaping


single

single crochet is a foundation stitch, it is one of the most used stitch


skein

yarn that has been wound up into a center-pull bundle


skip

indicates that a stitch should be skipped and not crocheted into


slip stitch

a method used to join rounds in crochet, can also be used as a stitch


space

the distance or area within a stitch


stitches

a crochet hook interlocks loops of yarn to create knots or stitches


swatch

a small, crocheted square piece of fabric made up of 15-30 stitches


tail end

leftover yarn that is left sticking out of a crochet project


tension

pull or stress applied to the yarn as it is being used while crocheting


terminology

specialized vocabulary used for crochet


throat

located underneath the tip of a crochet hook


together

a term often used in decreasing or shaping stitches


travel

using a slip stitch to take the yarn from one point of a crocheted project to another without being seen


triple

triple crochet, also called a treble crochet, a basic crochet stitch


turn

turning a crochet project around to work on the opposite side


turning chain

series of chain stitches that make up the height of a crochet stitch


v-stitch

a basic crochet stitch that creates a decorative v-shaped stitch


weaving

to weave or stitch in yarn ends to finish off a crochet project


whipstitch

this is used join two crocheted pieces of crocheted fabric together


working yarn

the yarn being worked or pulled from the skein or ball of yarn


wrong side

the opposite or wrong side of a crochet swatch or project


woven seam

used to join two pieces of a crocheted piece of fabric side by side


wrapping

wrap the yarn around the hook two or more times to form a stitch


yarn over

wrap the yarn over the crochet hook from front to back
